Talk To Your Deck Builder About Adding These Features

A deck can be pretty simple. All it really has to be is a raised, wooden platform with some stairs. However, there are plenty of ways to make your deck safer, more functional, and more enjoyable. If you are having a custom deck built, talk to your builder about including some or all of the following features.

Non-Slip Finish

You've probably known someone who slipped and fell on a wooden deck after a rain storm. This is a common way to injure yourself since wood does get slippery when wet. Thankfully, there are slip-resistant finishes that deck builders can use. Some just have a little sand or grit worked into the formula so they give the finished surface more grip and friction. Others contain plastic agents that just don't become slippery when wet. If you have your deck finished with a non-slip product, you will be able to use it safely after it rains outside.

Grill Stops

Do you plan on grilling on your deck? If so, then you might worry about your grill rolling around on the wooden surface. A good solution to this is to have your deck builder include grill stops on the deck. These are basically chunks of wood that you attach to the floor of the deck. You can back the grill up against them to keep it from rolling while you use it.

Built-in Benches

You can certainly set up patio chairs on your deck. However, another option is to have your builder include some built-in benches in the design. A wooden bench along one side of the deck ensures you always have a place to sit. Since it will be connected to the deck and finished with the same waterproof coating, you won't ever have to take it down or bring it inside to store it.

Wrap-Around Railing

Instead of just having a railing installed down the side of the stairs, have one installed all of the way around the deck. Make sure the bottom rail is low, and that the top rail is high enough that nobody will flip over it. This will make it safer for kids to spend time on the deck, and it will also make the deck a safer place at night.

Your deck does not have to include all of these features, but it sure will be nice if it includes a few of them. Talk to your builder to get more ideas.
